Virtual Production AI 3D Backgrounds
LED volume virtual production (VP) replaces physical sets with real-time rendered 3D environments on LED walls. HiPtah accelerates the asset creation phase by generating environment base meshes and props that can be brought into Unreal Engine or Unity for real-time rendering.
Target Audience
- Independent filmmakers using LED volume stages
- Commercial directors needing fast environment concepts
- TV productions exploring virtual set options
- Student and short film productions building portfolio pieces
Workflow
- Scout your virtual location — Define the environment for each shot. Write detailed text prompts. "Brutalist concrete city street at dusk, wet pavement reflecting neon signs, steam rising from grates, moody overcast sky."
- Generate base environments — Create 3-5 environment variations. Focus on silhouette, scale, and lighting mood.
- Export and optimize — Download as GLB/FBX. In Unreal Engine, use the proxy LOD system to reduce polygon counts while maintaining visual fidelity.
- Integrate into virtual set — Place in scene, adjust scale, add real-time lighting that matches your LED wall illumination.
- Add parallax and movement — Set up subtle camera parallax to enhance depth on LED walls. Add animated elements (fog, flickering lights, traffic) for life.
Virtual Production Setup Types
| VP Scale | LED Wall Config | HiPtah Use Case | |----------|-----------------|-----------------| | Indie/small | 10-20 ft curved LED | Environment blockouts, prop generation | | Mid-size | 20-50 ft wrap-around | Full environment rooms, large props | | Professional | 50+ ft full volume | Full sets, extended environments, hero props |
Environment Prompt Formula
Use this template for consistent results:
[Style] + [Location Type] + [Time of Day] + [Weather/Mood] + [Key Details] + [Atmosphere]
Example: "Sci-fi space station corridor, midnight shift, flickering emergency lights, exposed pipes and cables, cold blue ambient glow, tense atmosphere."
Export for Unreal Engine
- Use GLB format for fastest import into Unreal.
- Enable nanite (UE5) for automatic LOD and pixel depth.
- Add a distance field ambient occlusion material function for realism on LED walls.
